SYMPTOMS

When you use Data map to create a map based on your data, and you use category shading and you display a full legend with numeric values, the items in the legend may appear to be out of order.

CAUSE

The numeric items in the legend are treated as text. Therefore, they are sorted by the first character of the number for each item. If two legend items have the same first character then the two items are sorted relative to each other by the second character, and so on. The legend items are not sorted by numeric value or geographic location.

Example

Consider the following numbers:

1000
10000
2
500
1

These numbers are sorted and displayed in the legend as follows:

1
1000
10000
2
500

All numbers that start with 1 are listed first. Numbers that start with 2 come after numbers that start with 1 and before numbers that start with 3, and so on.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
