Updated Ifsmgr.vxd Resolves Problems with Tilde in 8.3 Names |

SYMPTOMS
If you create a standard FAT 8.3 filename that includes a tilde (~) in the eighth position of the filename, all subsequent 8.3 filenames with the same first seven characters are treated as long filenames. This behavior effectively changes the filenames for programs that do not use long filenames.
CAUSE
This problem is generated by the parsing routines that Ifsmgr.vxd uses to determine that a filename is long and should be aliased to an 8.3 name. The problem occurs specifically with 8.3 filenames that have all eight characters of the filename filled, with a tilde as the last character.
RESOLUTION
This issue is resolved by the following updated file(s) for Windows 95, and later versions of these file(s):
IFSMGR.VXD version 4.00.951 dated 9/19/95 165,053 bytes
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 95. An update to address this problem is now available, but is not fully regression tested and should be applied only to computers experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft does not recommend implementing this update at this time. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for additional information about the availability of this update.
This issue is resolved in Microsoft Windows 98.
