The following article describes how to download the Encarta Encyclopedia Yearbook Builder updates. The Yearbook Updates can be downloaded via The Microsoft Network (MSN) or the Microsoft World Wide Web page on the Internet.

The Microsoft Network

If you are a member of The Microsoft Network, obtaining updates is easy. You can use the MSN shortcut button on the new Add Months screen to go directly to the Encarta 96 Encyclopedia Yearbook Builder BBS on MSN, where you can see which files are available today.

To Download Updates from within Encarta

1. Double-click the Shortcut icon to the Yearbook Builder BBS.

2. Double-click the messages containing the monthly updates you want.

3. Save the update files in your Encarta Encyclopedia Yearbook directory.

   1. On the File menu, click Save As.

   2. In the Save As dialog box, click Attachments. Save your updates in your Encarta Encyclopedia Yearbook folder (probably C:Files Reference Encyc, where C is the letter of your hard drive).

4. Click OK. Each file takes about 6 minutes to download if you are using a 9600 bps modem. If you have problems downloading the monthly updates using the above method, see the section below titled “Accessing Monthly Updates Directly from MSN”.

5. After you have finished downloading files, click the Integrate button in the Add New Months screen of Yearbook Builder.

   NOTE: Do not click the Integrate button if you intend to copy Yearbook Builder update files to another computer. You should first copy the .EYB files you downloaded. After you have copied the files you want, then you should click the Integrate button to ensure that the updates appear in Encarta Encyclopedia. After you click the Integrate button, .EYB files are deleted.

6. To see the latest entries to your Encarta 96 Encyclopedia Yearbook, click the Month in Review or Update Browser buttons on the Yearbook Builder screen.

If this is your first time downloading files to your Encarta 96 Yearbook Builder, please give us your name, e-mail address and postal address. This information is optional, but if you provide it, we will keep you informed about new features to look for in Encarta Encyclopedia and the Yearbook Builder program.

Accessing Monthly Updates Directly from MSN

To access and download the monthly updates, do the following. Do not log into MSN from Encarta.

1. Start MSN.

2. On the Tools menu, click Find.

3. Click On The Microsoft Network.

4. In the Containing field, type the following:

   encarta updates

5. The In field should have the following options selected:

   • Name
   • Topic, place and people
   • Description

6. Click Find Now.

7. Double-click Yearbook Builder Files BBS (Read-only). The command takes you to the Bulletin Board Folder containing the Encarta 96 Updates.

8. Continue with Step 2 in the section of this article called, “To Download Updates from within Encarta”.

You can obtain Yearbook Builder files through online services that provide World Wide Web browsers and Internet access.

Downloading Updates

1. Log on to an online service and start your World Wide Web browser. Enter the address of the Encarta 96 Encyclopedia web page:

   http://www.microsoft.com/Encarta

2. Click Yearbook Builder to display available update files.

3. Select the monthly updates you want.

4. Save the update files in your Encarta Encyclopedia Yearbook folder.

   For example, if you are running Windows 95, your Encarta Encyclopedia Yearbook folder is probably C:FilesReference Encyc, where C is the letter of your hard drive.

   If you are running Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11, then your Encarta Encyclopedia Yearbook folder may be C:, where C is the letter of your hard drive.

   Each file takes about 6 minutes to download if you are using a 9600 bps modem.

5. After you have finished downloading files, in the Add New Months screen of Yearbook Builder, click Integrate.
