SYMPTOMS

If you try to open a publication created in Microsoft Publisher for Windows, version 1.0, in a later version of Publisher running under Windows 95, and that publication contains linked Paintbrush objects, you will get the following error message:

Publisher does not have enough memory to load graphics or embedded objects.

After you click OK to get past this message, the publication will open, but all of the Paintbrush objects will appear as empty OLE frames.

CAUSE

The version of Paintbrush that ships with Microsoft Windows 95 implements OLE very differently from the versions of Paintbrush that ship with Microsoft Windows 3.x and Microsoft Windows NT Workstation.

WORKAROUND

Method 1: Paste the Image as a Metafile

If you have Publisher 1.0 on your system, you can open the publication in that version of Publisher. You can then cut the Paintbrush objects, choose Paste Special, and choose Metafile from the list of formats to paste. If you save the publication and open it in a later version of Publisher, the objects will appear correctly.

Method 2: Try Opening the Publication on a Different OS

If you don't have Publisher 1.0 on your system, you can try opening the publication on a computer running Windows 3.x or Windows NT Workstation (Publisher for Windows 95 will run on Windows NT version 3.51). You can then cut the Paintbrush objects and paste them as bitmaps.

NOTE: For this to work, you must copy not only the publication but also the Paintbrush files to the Windows 3.x or Windows NT computer.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
