The information in this article applies to:

- Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, and 5.0c - Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0 and 5.0a - Microsoft Excel for Windows NT, version 5.0 - Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel, you can use the Apply Names feature to search formulas in selected cells and replace references with names defined for them. However, when you use Apply Names, only references in formulas on the active sheet will be replaced with names that have references on that worksheet.

MORE INFORMATION

With Apply Names, only references in formulas on the active sheet will be replaced with names that have references on that worksheet. You cannot use Apply Names to replace references for formulas that refer to another sheet.

For example, if you have a workbook that contains a name "MyName" that refers to "Sheet1!A1", you may use Apply Names to replace the reference "A1" in formulas on Sheet1 but you cannot use Apply Names to replace the reference "Sheet1!A1" on sheets other than Sheet1 in the workbook.

This behavior is by design of Microsoft Excel.
