MXL5: Data in Edition Changes After Inserting Cells on Sheet
Last reviewed: March 31, 1997

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.0a
SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Excel, when you publish information on a worksheet, the published edition may not contain the data that you published if you insert or delete cells on your worksheet after you create the publisher.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because if you add or remove cells on your worksheet so that the published data reference is changed, the reference in the published edition is not adjusted. That is, the published edition contains the cell reference that was published, not the new reference of the published data.
Note that to view the updated information in a published edition after inserting or deleting cells on your worksheet, you may need to select the publisher link in the Links dialog box, and click the Update Now button.
For example, if you publish the data in cells A2:A3 on your worksheet, and you then insert a cell above cell A2, so that your data is now in cells A3:A4, the published edition now contains the data in cells A2:A3, so that not all of your published data is still contained in the edition.
If you insert cells so that the published cell reference changes, when you view the publisher link in the Links dialog box, the Source File reference is not adjusted.
Note that this behavior is different from the behavior of published information in Microsoft Excel version 4.0.
WORKAROUNDS
To work around this problem, use any of the following methods.
Method 1: Insert or delete cells on your worksheet so that the published
data has the cell reference it had when you created the publisher.
Method 2: Create a new publisher using the data with the new cell
reference.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
