SUMMARY
This article provides instructions to install Microsoft Bookshelf 1.00 for MS-DOS and the resulting screens shown during the installation process. The installation steps are equivalent to the information you see on screen during the Setup process.
The installation steps assume:
Dual Floppy Configuration:
- Your MS-DOS disk drive is drive A.
- Your temporary drive is B.
- Your CD-ROM drive is drive C.
- Your RAM disk is drive D.
Hard Disk Installation:
- Your hard disk drive is drive C.
- Your destination directory is C:
- Your CD-ROM drive is drive D.
If your hard disk drive, destination directory, temporary drive, RAM disk drive, or CD-ROM drive letters and directories are different, replace the drive letters and directory names with the drive letters and directory names on your computer.

Method 1: Installation To Floppy Disk
From the MS-DOS command prompt on drive A, type the following
C:
and press the ENTER key.
Bookshelf Setup:
Welcome to Microsoft Bookshelf Setup
Your will use this program to install Bookshelf on your computer, to set aside space for temporary files, and to modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
You will need to answer the following questions:
- Do you have a hard disk? A RAM disk?
- Where do you want to store the Bookshelf programs? Press ENTER to continue.
You will answer questions during the Setup procedure by selecting one of the buttons at the bottom of each screen.
The double-lined buttons are pre-selected for you. To carry out the action in a double-lined button, press ENTER.
To select another button, press the TAB key until the button is highlighted, and then press Spacebar.
You can use the Cancel button to exit Setup whenever this button appears on your screen.
The first thing Setup needs to know is if you have a hard disk.
If you have a hard disk, press ENTER. Setup stores the Bookshelf programs on your hard disk.
If you have floppy disk drives only, tab to the Floppy Disk button, and then press Spacebar. Setup will keep the Bookshelf programs on the Bookshelf CD ROM.
Press TAB
Press SPACE BAR
Bookshelf needs a work space in which to store temporary files. You must now tell Setup where to place the temporary work space.
If you have a RAM disk and want to use it for temporary work space, press ENTER.
If you do not have a RAM disk, tab to the Floppy Disk button, and then press Spacebar.
NOTE: Bookshelf runs much faster when it uses a RAM disk to store temporary files. For more information on RAM disks, see your MS-DOS manual.
To place the temporary work space on your RAM Disk, you must specify its drive letter.
Type the drive letter for your RAM disk in the box below. Then press ENTER to continue.
Drive [ D: ]
In addition to using temporary work space, Bookshelf needs to save some information on floppy disk. You must now specify the drive where the floppy disk will be.
In the box below, Setup has suggested a drive. If you want to use this drive, press ENTER.
If you want to specify a different drive, type the drive letter in the box, and then press ENTER.
Drive [ B: ]
Setup Needs to modify the AUTOEXEC.BAT file on your DOS disk.
Insert the DOS disk you use to start up your computer into drive A, and then close the drive door.
Press ENTER
Bookshelf is now installed on your computer.
Getting Started

Start the Learning Microsoft Bookshelf tutorial.
Start Bookshelf.
Exit Setup.

Before running Bookshelf, read the README.DOC file provided on the Bookshelf CD-ROM. This file contains information that became available after the Bookshelf manuals were printed.
To read the README.DOC file:
Make the CD ROM drive the current drive.
At the prompt, type the following and press ENTER:
type readme.doc
Bookshelf Tutorial
The Learning Microsoft Bookshelf tutorial teaches many of the basic skills you will need to use Bookshelf.
To start the tutorial:
Make the CD ROM drive the current drive.
At the prompt, type the following and press ENTER:
learn
To run Bookshelf, follow these steps:
Make the Bookshelf directory the active directory.
At the DOS prompt, type the following and press ENTER.
books
Setup will now reset your computer so it can read the new AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
Press ENTER to exit Setup and reset your computer.
Method 2: Installation To Hard Disk
From the MS-DOS command prompt on drive C, type
D:
and press the ENTER key.
