SYMPTOMS
When a WordPerfect 5.x for MS-DOS or Windows document is opened into Word 6.0, all footnote reference numbers in the body of the document may appear as the number 1, even though coinciding footnote numbers accompanying footnote text increment correctly.
WORKAROUND
If you have access to WordPerfect 5.x, reopen the affected document in WordPerfect and search in Reveal Codes for the first instance of a Footnote Option ([Ftn Opt]) code. Backspace over this code to delete it, resave your WordPerfect document with a new name, and reopen it in Word.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Word versions referenced at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
