Converted WordPerfect File Containing Graphics Grows in Size |
Q132254
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
- Microsoft Word for Windows NT, version 6.0
SYMPTOMS
When you open a WordPerfect document into Word 6.0 for Windows or Word 6.0 for Windows NT, its file size may increase significantly. This occurs when the document is a WordPerfect 5.x or 6.x for DOS or Windows document containing graphic images embedded from TIFF, PCX, BMP, or other bitmap graphic formats.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because WordPerfect compresses bitmap graphics inserted into its documents. Word's WPG graphic import filter does not retain compression, and these images expand to their original size following conversion. NOTE: There are other reasons why a file's size can increase when you open a WordPerfect document into Word, including
- Word's file format differs from that used by WordPerfect.
- Information about WordPerfect formatting codes is retained in a Word document to better facilitate formatting retention in round-trip conversion.
- Certain WordPerfect features must be emulated with a combination of formatting when formatting model differences in the two products necessitate.
RESOLUTION
When possible, use non-bitmap (vector) graphics in WordPerfect documents that you plan to convert for use in Word.
If you are using WordPerfect for Windows, you can retain images in Windows Metafile (WMF) format. If you use this option, the existence of graphics in a WordPerfect document will not generate a significant file size increase following conversion to Word.
