MPRJ4: OLE Links Lost Saving File to MPX File Format |
Q130103
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Project for the Macintosh, version 4.0
SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Project, when you save a project to the MPX 4.0 file format, any OLE links that you created in the project are deleted when you open the file. Upon opening, you receive a message similar to:
Can't connect to link 'Project1Project1:LINK_1'. This link will now be deleted.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because when you save a project file to the MPX 4.0 file format, if the file contains OLE links, the link to the server file is written incorrectly so that the link cannot be established again when you open the MPX file again in Microsoft Project.
This problem only occurs when you save a project file to the MPX file format, and it only affects OLE links to information contained in the file.
Note that this problem does not occur with DDE links, and does not occur in Microsoft Project for Windows.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, you can restore the OLE links in the MPX file by doing the following:
- Open the MPX file in SimpleText (or Microsoft Word).
Locate the line in the file that contains the link name, such as :Project1:LINK_1, and remove everything from the link name except "LINK_XX" (where XX is the link number). For example, if the line that contains the link name appears as follows
81,:Project1:LINK_1,"T(2,1)"
edit the line so that it appears as the following:
- Repeat Step 2 above for each link in the file.
- Save the changes to the file, and reopen the file in Microsoft Project.
MORE INFORMATION
Note that when you save a project file to the MPX file format when the file contains a linked object created in another application, such as a Microsoft Excel worksheet object, the link to the object is not saved. This behavior is by design.
Additionally, when you save a project file to the MPX file format that contains a link to information in another project file, the link to the information is not saved. This behavior is also by design of Microsoft Project.
