SYMPTOMS

After you download transactions from Bank On-Line you may get the following error message:

MSMONEY caused a general protection fault in module MSMONEY.EXE

CAUSE

This general protection (GP) fault occurs when Money matches a downloaded transaction with one already in your account book.

This match may be caused by one of the following situations:

  1. The transaction being matched uses a split category with an unassigned amount.
  2. If a downloaded transaction does not match any unreconciled transaction, but the last transaction for that payee was a transfer transaction, a GP fault may occur.
  3. The GP fault also may occur in the unlikely event that there are more accounts than categories in your data file.

WORKAROUND

Use the following troubleshooting steps to avoid GP faults with Bank On-Line.

  1. If you get a GP fault while matching a split transaction, make sure the split transaction includes a category for every line in the split with a dollar amount, or remove the split by assigning one category to the entire transaction.

If you are uncertain which transaction caused the GP fault, make sure all unreconciled split transactions include a category for every line.

Use the following steps to customize your view to show only transactions with blank categories.

    1. From the View pull-down list, choose Other.

    2. From the Category pull-down list, in the Other View dialog box, choose Blank Category.

    3. Choose OK.

Now, you see only transactions without an assigned category. Edit these transactions to include a category for each line in the split transaction.

NOTE: If this custom view does not show any transactions, you may have a split transaction that includes a line with a $0.00 value and does not have a category. At this point, you must individually examine each unreconciled split transaction to find the cause of the problem.

  2. Be sure to include categories in all your split transactions. If you ever see a dialog box that indicates that your split transaction needs to be adjusted, NEVER select the Continue With Unassigned Amount option.

  3. If you receive a GP fault when Money does not find a match, try one of the following workarounds:

    • Turn off Money’s SmartFill feature using the following steps:

      1. From the Tools Menu, choose Options.

      2. Choose General.

      3. Clear the Use SmartFill check box.

      -or-

    • If there is no payee in the Confirm Transaction dialog, then enter a payee and let Money SmartFill the information from that payee.

Recovering the Downloaded Transactions

After correcting your Money file, you will need to recover the interrupted downloaded transactions using either of the following two methods.

  • Manually reconstruct the process interrupted by the GP fault.

    -or-

  • Contact Bank On-Line and download the transactions again. This method may duplicate transactions unless you confirm match during download.

NOTE: Before you download transactions into Money, use the following steps to set Money’s Bank On-Line options to ask you to confirm every transaction:

  1. From the Tools menu, choose Options. Select Bank On-Line.
  2. In the Confirm That A Transactions Matches dialog box, select the Ask Me To Confirm section. Select Every Transaction.
  3. Choose OK.

Method 1

If you saved a copy of the Summary Information report in a text file prior to beginning the matching process, use the following steps to manually reconstruct the interrupted process.

  1. Open the saved text file.
  2. Manually match any existing transactions. Mark them as cleared by pressing and holding down your CTRL key while you press the M key (CTRL+M).
  3. Enter any new transactions and mark them cleared.

NOTE: For information on how to save a copy of the downloaded information, see the “MORE INFORMATION” section below.

Method 2

If you did not save a copy of the downloaded information, you must contact Bank On-Line and request to have the transactions downloaded again.

NOTE: Make sure you removed the cause of the GP fault before following these steps.

  1. From the On-Line menu, choose Bank On-Line.
  2. In the Bank On-Line option box, choose the Inquiry button.
  3. Write a General Purpose letter asking Bank On-Line to download transactions again. You must specify the date range desired. Choose the OK button.
  4. Clear all check boxes in the Instructions For Bank On-Line area except Letter.
  5. Choose the Call button to send your letter. Bank On-Line will respond within 48 hours.
  6. After receiving a response from Bank On-Line, proceed with downloading.
  7. After downloading and matching the transactions for a second time, examine the transactions to find duplicates.
  8. From the Edit menu, choose Delete Transaction to remove duplicates.
