Numbers Formatted as Fractions Are Reformatted in Works 3.0

Article ID: 128634

Article Last Modified on 9/25/2003

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Works 3.0 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Works 3.0a
  • Microsoft Works 3.0b

This article was previously published under Q128634

SYMPTOMS

In a Microsoft Works Spreadsheet or Database document, if you format a number to round to a particular fraction while Do Not Reduce is selected, new entries to the cell or field reset the formatting.

For example, if you format a cell in your spreadsheet to round to 1/32 and select the Do Not Reduce check box, when you enter "0 16/32" (without the quotes), the fraction is reformatted to All Fractions and is reduced to "0 1/2".

NOTE: The issue does not affect formulas formatted to display as fractions.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Works versions 3.0, 3.0a, and 3.0b for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

You must reformat the appropriate cell or field each time you enter a new fraction or change an existing entry. To reformat the cell or field, do the following:

  1. Select the cell or field to be reformatted.
  2. From the Format menu, choose Number.
  3. Select Fraction from the Format options.
  4. In the Round to section, choose the appropriate fraction and select the Do not reduce check box. Choose OK.
