SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project for the Macintosh, if you create a link between two projects, and you open the projects in Microsoft Project for Windows, when you change the source information, the linked information in the destination project is not updated.

CAUSE

This behavior only occurs with a link that you created in Microsoft Project for the Macintosh when you open the files in Microsoft Project for Windows. When you open the files in Microsoft Project for Windows and you view the link in the Links dialog box, the Automatic option is selected for the link. However, the link behaves as a Manual link: that is, you can update the link by using the Update Now button in the Links dialog box. This behavior occurs even if you choose to re-establish the links in the project when you open the destination file.

Note that when you open the files in Microsoft Project for the Macintosh, even if you have saved the files in Microsoft Project for Windows, the links are updated automatically as expected.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you can update the linked information in the destination project by doing the following:

  1. From the Edit menu, choose Links.
  2. From the list of links, select the link that you want to update, and choose the Update Now button.

Note that you will have to use this method each time you want to update the information because the link still is not updated automatically.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
