PRJ4: Recurring Task Incorrectly Inserted at Outline Level 10

Q127967

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project for Windows, version 4.0
  • Microsoft Project for the Macintosh, version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you select a task that is at outline level 9 or above, and if the task is located below a task at outline level 10, if you then insert a recurring task, the recurring task is inserted at level 10.

CAUSE

Normally, if you select a task that is at outline level 10, or you select a task that is located below a task at outline level 10, if you attempt to insert a recurring task, you receive the following error message:

Microsoft Project can only insert Recurring Tasks at outline level 9 or above

In Microsoft Project, the lowest outline level allowed is level 10. Because a recurring task displays the individual subtasks one outline level below the recurring task, the recurring task itself must be an outline level 9 or above.

However, when you select a task at outline level 9 or above, if the previous task in the table is at outline level 10, and you insert a recurring task, you do not receive an error message. Instead, the recurring task is inserted at level 10. When this occurs, the task appears with a duration of 1 day, and is not displayed on the Gantt Chart timescale, and the children tasks can't be displayed.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, if the recurring task is inserted at outline level 10, do the following:

  1. Select the recurring task.
  2. From the Formatting toolbar, choose the Outdent button.

The recurring task is now at outline level 9, and the task appears on the timescale. Additionally, you can now display the individual subtasks by selecting the recurring task and choosing the Show Subtasks button from the Formatting toolbar.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
