Internet Assistant: Nested Bookmarks Removed After Conversion

Q127169

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Assistant for Word, versions 1.0z, 2.0z
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0a, 6.0c

SYMPTOMS

When you save a document as HTML, bookmarks undergo the following changes:

  • A bookmark that encompass more than one paragraph will encompass only one paragraph after conversion.
  • A bookmark that includes a nested bookmark is replaced by a bookmark that ends prior to the nested bookmark.

CAUSE

By design, HTML markup does not allow nested bookmarks, so it ends the bookmark at the end of the paragraph in which the bookmark resides.

MORE INFORMATION

Bookmarks are converted to Anchor (<A>) tags and include the NAME attribute. In HTML, Anchors to bookmarks represent the destination for your ypertext links and are typically a word or short phrase.

For more information on how bookmarks are used in HTML, from the Help menu, choose "Microsoft Internet Assistant for Word Help" choose the Search button and type "Bookmark" (without the quotation marks), then highlight the "Hyperlink to Bookmark" topic and choose the GoTo button.
