Data Is Lost Canceling Move to Field That Contains Linked Data

SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Project, if you select a field in your table and drag it to a field that contains linked data, you receive a dialog box that contains the following information:
Field contains linked data. Okay to remove entire link?
If you choose No to cancel the operation, the data in the field that you moved is not restored.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because when you move a field by dragging it to a new location on your project, you are essentially performing a Cut procedure, followed by a Paste procedure. When you receive the dialog box that asks if you want to remove the entire link, the Cut procedure has already been performed. If you choose No, the Paste procedure is canceled, but the Cut procedure cannot be canceled.
If you choose the Help button in the dialog box that appears asking if you want to remove the entire link, the information that is displayed indicates that choosing No cancels the action. However, in this case, the only action canceled is the Paste action.
Note that this drag-and-drop method for moving information does not use the Windows Clipboard, so you cannot choose Paste from the Edit menu to restore the information.
WORKAROUNDS
To work around this problem, undo the entire move procedure by choosing Undo from the Edit menu immediately after you choose No in the dialog box asking if you want to remove the entire link.

Note that the dialog box that asks if you want to replace the entire link appears whenever you clear or change information in a field that contains linked data. For example, this message appears if you select a field that contains linked data and you choose Cut or Paste from the Edit menu. The message also appears if you drag information to or from the field that contains linked data.
Note that if you select a field that contains linked data, and drag it to another field in your table, you also receive the message described above. However, if you choose No in this case, the linked data remains in the cell that you dragged, and the data contained in the field that you dragged is pasted to the destination cell without the link.
