SYMPTOMS
Case 1
When you apply Heading Numbering to a numbered list while the Mark Revisions While Editing option is selected, the number of the next item will duplicate the number in the line being edited. This behavior occurs when you use the DEL or BACKSPACE key to delete the first character of the list item. The numbered items return to their correct sequence after you accept or reject all revisions.
Case 2
In a similar fashion, if you apply Heading Numbering to lines that begin with manually typed numbers, certain numbers will be duplicated.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Word.
To work around this problem, use either of the following methods.
Case 1
To modify the first character in your numbered list without changing the numbering sequence, first highlight the character(s), then type the new text to replace the selection.
Case 2
Accept all revisions and then apply Heading Numbering.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows.
