SYMPTOMS

If you open a file that has been saved from a Japanese version of PowerPoint 4.0 in either the American or other non-Asian international version of PowerPoint, you may get the following error message:

Sorry, the file cannot be opened by this version of PowerPoint.

CAUSE

The file structure for Japanese PowerPoint 4.0 presentations is different from other versions of PowerPoint 4.0.

RESOLUTION

To convert the file properly, you must reopen the file in the Japanese version of PowerPoint and save it as a PowerPoint 4.0 U.S. file.

1. Open the file in the Japanese version of PowerPoint 4.0.
2. From the File menu, choose Save As.
3. From the Save File As Type list, select PowerPoint 4.0 US.
4. In the filename box, type a new name, select the appropriate disk drive, and choose OK.
