SYMPTOMS

Horizontally centered tables become uncentered when you adjust the width of the left column by dragging the left edge of the column.

WORKAROUND

Use one of the methods below to recenter the table correctly.

Method 1

After table had been adjusted, change the Indent From Left measurement to 0 (zero) or whatever left indent amount is preferred by doing the following:

  1. On the Table menu, click Cell Height and Width.
  2. Select the Row tab.
  3. In the Indent From Left box, type 0 (zero) or your preferred amount.
  4. Clcik OK.

Method 2

Rather than dragging the left column to resize it, change the column width in the Column dialog box by doing the following:

  1. On the Table menu, click Cell Height and Width.
  2. Select the Column tab.
  3. Type in the Width of the Column.
  4. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows and Word 98 Macintosh Edition.

MORE INFORMATION

If you adjust a horizontally centered table from the left side of the left column, the table becomes uncentered. The amount the column was adjusted is now the Indent From Left setting in the Row dialog box. Adjustment from the right side of the column(s) works properly. (To locate the Row dialog box, choose Cell Height And Width from the Table menu, and select the Row tab.)
