SYMPTOMS

In Works 3.0, a general protection (GP) fault may occur in module MSWORKS.EXE when you format cells or fields as dates or when you insert a long date placeholder, *longdate*, in the Word Processor module. In Works 2.0, in addition to the Word Processor symptom mentioned above, entering non-date information in the Spreadsheet or Database List will cause a GP fault.

CAUSE

This problem is caused by a trailing quotation mark in the "sLongDate=" line of the WIN.INI file. The line may look like this:

   sLongDate=dddd, MMMM dd, yyyy'

Instead, the sLongDate line should read:

   sLongDate=dddd, MMMM dd, yyyy

NOTE: The "sLongDate=" line may vary. For example, the line may contain other quotation marks that are not at the end of the line. These quotation marks can be left; only the quotation mark at the end of the line must be removed.

RESOLUTION

Use the following steps to remove the quotation mark in the WIN.INI file:

  1. Open the WIN.INI file in a text editor, such as Notepad.
  2. Find the sLongDate line.
  3. Delete the quotation mark from the end of the line.
  4. Save the changes to the WIN.INI file, and exit the text editor.
  5. Restart Windows for the change in the WIN.INI file to take effect.

The GP fault will no longer occur when you insert the long date placeholder in Word Processor or when you format cells for dates in Spreadsheet or Database. In Works 2.0, non-date entries will no longer cause a GP fault.
