The information in this article applies to:

  • == Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a, 4.0c ==

SYMPTOMS

If you play an embedded Video for Windows (AVI) movie before another sound object has finished playing, the video will be played without its soundtrack.

This problem happens most frequently if you have a long sound object on one slide that is still playing when you advance to the next slide. A movie on the following slide will be played without its soundtrack.

CAUSE

Media Player can’t use the Windows sound driver if another application is also using it. When Media Player plays a movie, it checks to see if the sound driver is available. If the driver is not available, the movie is played without audio.

WORKAROUND

Use the following steps to adjust the play settings for the movie so that the movie will not start playing until after the sound object finishes:

  1. Note how long the sound file takes to play.
  2. Select the movie object and click Play Settings on the Tools menu.
  3. In the Start Play section of the Play Settings dialog box, select the When Transition check box, then select the Ends, Plus option. In the text field, type the number of seconds that is larger than the number of seconds the sound object will be playing.
  4. Choose OK.

When you run the slide show, PowerPoint will wait the number of seconds you specified in step 3 before it plays the movie. If the sound object has finished playing by then, the movie will be played with audio.

STATUS

This is not a problem with PowerPoint. If you play a long sound file using the Windows Sound Recorder, then try to play a Video for Windows file in Media Player, the movie will also play without audio.
