SYMPTOMS

If you are running Microsoft Windows NT version 3.5, and you attempt to add an object to an Access version 2.0 table, the following error message appears:

Error in OLE operation

This problem is more likely to occur on computers that do not have networking components installed.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem:

  1. Review the registry, the application REG.DAT file, and your hard disk drive directory structure to ensure all of the OLE .DLL files are in the path specified and that the correct OLE registration information was written to the registry when the application was installed.
  2. Install a network adapter driver and bind default Windows NT protocols to the driver. If you do not have a network adapter, install the MS Loopback Adapter driver.
  3. Restart Windows NT.
  4. Reinstall the 16-bit application.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 3.5. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
