OFF4: Can't Drag Item from 68K App to PowerMac App

Q123959

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.0
  • Microsoft Word for the Power Macintosh, version 6.0
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for the Power Macintosh, version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

You cannot drag an item from a 68K version of an application to a Power Macintosh version of an application (when you attempt to do this you will receive a Stop icon--a circle with a slash through it).

NOTE: That you can, however, drag an item between two 68K applications or between two Power Macintosh applications.

CAUSE

You cannot pass information from a 68K- version of an application to a Power-Macintosh version of an application because these applications are registered differently. Power Macintosh applications are registered in the PPC Registration Database, while 68K applications are registered in the Registration Database.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use the Clipboard to copy the item from a 68K application and paste it to a Power Macintosh application (and vice versa).
