MXL5: System Error Opening Password Protected XL4 Workbook

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel version 5.0 for the Macintosh, you may receive a system error when you open a Microsoft Excel 4.0 workbook file if the workbook file contains unbound sheets with file sharing protection passwords.

Depending on your operating system version and your type of Macintosh, the error produced will be one of the following: Type 1, Type 11, Bad F-Line Instruction, or Application Unexpectedly Quit.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:

Method 1: Reopen the workbook file in Microsoft Excel 4.0 and remove the

          passwords from the unbound sheets.

Method 2: Open the unbound sheets directly in Microsoft Excel 5.0. Do not

          open the Microsoft Excel 4.0 workbook file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
