  • == Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a, 4.0c ==

SUMMARY

Some TrueType fonts in PowerPoint 3.0 do not have bold or italic formatting. If you apply bold or italic formatting to these fonts, the fonts will not appear to be changed. The font will display (and thus print) as if those formatting attributes were never applied. This can make presentations created in PowerPoint 4.0 and saved in PowerPoint 3.0 format look different when viewed in PowerPoint 3.0.

MORE INFORMATION

PowerPoint 3.0 is much stricter about presenting a WYSIWYG appearance than PowerPoint 4.0. If a font does not have support for an attribute (no bold, italic, or bold-italic TrueType font files), then PowerPoint 3.0 will not try to render that attribute even though Windows can synthesize it.

PowerPoint 4.0 does not have this limit. It will call the appropriate Windows functions to synthesize attributes that are not directly supported by the font.
