SYMPTOMS
The Remove button in the Format Bullets and Numbering dialog box may be unavailable (dimmed) after you remove Multilevel numbering from a table. This means you cannot remove other numbering formatting from the table unless you use the Numbering button on the Standard toolbar.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs only if you remove the Multilevel numbering from the first column of the table. Specifically, the Remove button is unavailable if you select any column other than column 1 or if you select a single cell. By contrast, the Remove button is available if you position the insertion point in a single cell (but do not select anything) in any column other than column 1.
NOTE: The Remove button remains available, as expected, if you remove Multilevel numbering from any column other than the first.
WORKAROUND
If the Remove button becomes unavailable, as described above, use the Numbering button on the Standard toolbar to remove any additional numbering formatting from your table.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows and Word 98 Macintosh Edition.
MORE INFORMATION
The following is a sample table to which Multilevel numbering formatting has been applied:

Below is a sample table in which numbering formatting was removed from the first column. In this table, the Remove button is unavailable if you select any column other than column 1, or if you select a single cell.
+--------------+-------------+-----------+--------------+ | | 1. | 1. | 1. | |--------------+-------------+-----------+--------------| | | 2. | 2. | 2. | |--------------+-------------+-----------+--------------| | | 3. | 3. | 3. | |--------------+-------------+-----------+--------------| | | 4. | 4. | 4. | +--------------+-------------+-----------+--------------+
