Creating Custom Text Wrap Envelopes in Publisher

Q122041

-------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Publisher versions 2.0 and 2.0a
-------------------------------------------------------------------

SUMMARY
=======

Publisher includes the ability to wrap text around pictures or
graphics. Page 265 of the "Microsoft Publisher User's Guide" discusses
usage of either regular wrap or an irregular wrap. In some cases,
irregular wrap may actually cut into a graphic due to an overly
complex wrap envelope. To work around this, layer an empty,
unbordered picture frame on top of the graphic, and use it to adjust
the text wrap. This will work if the text frame can be made
transparent, and the graphic in question can be layered behind it.

MORE INFORMATION
================

Use one of these methods to generate a simple wrap envelope.

NOTE: The envelope can be seen by choosing Show Boundaries And
Guides from the Tools menu.

1. Click in the frame that contains your text, then press CTRL+T (to
   make the text frame transparent).

2. Select the graphic that the text is wrapping around.

3. From the Layout menu, choose Send To Back.

4. Click the Picture tool on Publisher's tool palette.

5. Draw a picture frame over the graphic.

6. Adjust the size of the picture frame until the text is no longer
   touching the graphic.

If a square wrap is too simple, extra handles may be added by holding
down the CTRL key and clicking on the envelope where extra handles
are needed. Drag the new handle to adjust the envelope. Object
boundaries and guides must be showing to do this easily.

If a circular wrap envelope is needed:

1. Use steps 1-3 above.

2. Click the WordArt tool and drag a WordArt frame that is about
the same size as the graphic. Type the character "O" (without the
   quotation).

3. Close WordArt.

4. Create an irregular wrap around the WordArt Object. This should
   yield a round wrap envelope.

5. Double-click the WordArt object to edit it, and from the Format
menu, choose Shading. Change the shading to Clear and click OK.

6. Close WordArt.

This should create a circular wrap envelope that can be resized as
needed. Extra handles may be added to the envelope as noted above.
