XL5: Cannot Save Excel 4.0 Chart from Embedded Chart

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996
Article ID: Q121941

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel version 5.0, when you choose Save As from the File menu, you cannot save an embedded chart as an independent Microsoft Excel version 4.0 chart file (.XLC). In order to save an embedded chart as a Microsoft Excel version 4.0 chart file, you must copy it to a separate chart sheet.

WORKAROUND

To save an embedded chart from a Microsoft Excel version 5.0 document to a Microsoft Excel version 4.0 chart file:

  1. Double-click the embedded Microsoft Excel version 5.0 chart to bring it into an OLE 2.0 edit window.
  2. Select the Chart Area, and from the Edit menu, choose Copy.
  3. Press the F11 key to insert a blank chart sheet.
  4. From the Edit menu, choose Paste.
  5. From the File menu, choose Save As.
  6. From the Save File As Type list, choose Microsoft Excel 4.0 Chart.
  7. In Microsoft Excel 5.0, in the File Name box (the Save As box if you are using Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh), type an appropriate filename and choose OK.

Once you've saved the file as a Microsoft Excel 4.0 chart, you can delete the chart from the Microsoft Excel 5.0 chart if desired.

MORE INFORMATION

In Microsoft Excel version 4.0, an embedded chart can be saved as an independent chart (.XLC) file by double-clicking the embedded chart to bring it into a window and choosing Save As from the File menu. This method is not available when an embedded chart is brought into the OLE 2.0 edit window used by Microsoft Excel version 5.0. A separate Microsoft Excel version 5.0 chart sheet can be saved as a Microsoft Excel version 4.0 chart file from the File Save As menu choice.
