SYMPTOMS
When you save a file for the second time to a Novell network drive, Microsoft Project generates the following error message:
An unexpected error occurred while saving the file. The file could not be saved.
If the file is being save from a Windows NT workstation, a similar message is displayed.
CAUSE
Windows 3.0
The Microsoft Windows Netware.drv file contributes to this problem. This file contains executable code for NetWare-related functions within File Manager and Print Manager.
When you save a file after saving it once successfully, Microsoft Project cannot properly resolve its UNC filename with the filename on the server. For example, Microsoft Project maintains a filename such as the following
\\server\vol\Project1.mpp
although the server has a name such as Y:\Project1.mpp. The files are the same, but, depending on the version of Netware.drv installed, Microsoft Project cannot properly determine this; therefore, the save process is interrupted and fails.
NOTE: All OLE-based applications such as Microsoft Excel 5.0 and Microsoft Word 6.0 use UNC names when saving to network drives.
Windows NT 3.5 or Above
If the Novell Windows NT client version 3.5b is used, this problem may occur especially with files that contain embedded objects.
WORKAROUND
Windows 3.0
To work around this problem, use any of the following methods.
Method 1
As a temporary workaround, save the file to another location or with a different filename, or Save the file to a local drive and copy it to the file server after you're finished working with the file.
Method 2
As a permanent workaround, update your Novell workstation client software to the latest VLM (virtual loadable module) client instead of using the NETx client. The VLM client comes with version 3.x Netware.drv which works with Microsoft Project.
NOTE: It's recommended that you not mix the newer version 3.x Netware.drv file with the older NETx client; instead, you should install the Netware.drv version 3.x file with the VLM client.
Windows NT 3.5 or Above
Obtain from Novell the file NTC6.EXE. This file contains all of the latest patches for the Windows NT Novell client and has a fix specific to this problem.
