MXL5: Can't Choose New Folder or Exit Setup Using COMMAND Key

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996
Article ID: Q119317

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

In the Microsoft Excel Setup program, you cannot use the COMMAND+N key combination to choose the New Folder button, or COMMAND+E to choose the Exit Setup button in the dialog box that allows you to choose a destination folder.

CAUSE

The COMMAND key is not designed as a standard to choose any button in a dialog box, for example by pressing COMMAND+<the first letter on the button>. One of the reasons for this is that there may be a conflict when the key combination is for a Macintosh standard command, such as COMMAND+C for copy.

Note that Macintosh applications do not support button focus in a dialog box, so you cannot use the TAB and ARROW keys to change the button focus.

WORKAROUND

To choose the New Folder button in the Setup dialog box that allows you to change directories, you must use the mouse.

To exit the Setup program, press ESC.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

You can press COMMAND+D to choose the Desktop button, or COMMAND+O to choose the Open button. However, COMMAND+N does not choose the New Folder button, and COMMAND+E does not choose the Exit Setup button as expected.
