This September, Microsoft Press will publish three books aimed at introducing children ages 10 through 12 to the fascinating and fun world of computing. Each book is a delightful combination of colorful cartoon illustrations and engaging narrative. In MY FIRST BOOK ABOUT COMPUTERS, young readers can share in the adventures of Wendy, Bill, and their dog, Field, as they encounter computing for the first time. It’s an entertaining and informative first look at the history of computing, from the Chinese abacus to the microprocessors of Silicon Valley; computer concepts such as the binary number system, computer languages, programming, memory, and the CPU; and computer use today in schools, business, and homes. MY FIRST BOOK OF BASIC is a clever introduction to BASIC programming with an emphasis on “learning by doing.” Here, continuing the escapades of Wendy, Bill, and Field, a program becomes a colorful “monopoly game” in which the reader travels treacherous roads, finds clever shortcuts, travels through mazes, and avoids traps. Several dozen BASIC commands and statements are covered, one per page, along with well-chosen listings showing their uses. Instruction is by example, and the programs can be easily typed in and run. The last book in the series is a dynamically formatted dictionary. MY FIRST COMPUTER DICTIONARY contains 60 main entries, including, analog, bionics, digital, interaction, pixel, and robot.
