MCI: Attachments Unviewable with Windows Client

PSS ID Number: Q118866 Article last modified on 02-29-1996

2.10b

WINDOWS

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Mail Gateway to MCI, version 2.1b

SYMPTOMS

When you double-click an MCI Mail attachment, you may receive the following error:

The attached file ‘1’ cannot be opened because a temporary file could not be created.

NOTE: The Microsoft Mail for PC Networks, MS-DOS workstation will not have a problem viewing the attachment.

CAUSE

Many MCI Mail users use a foreign mail system to post messages to an MCI Mail account. MCI Mail gateways such as X.400 and Internet do not correctly place attachments in the MCI Mail account. The X.400 Gateway fails on 7-bit ASCII attachments.

MCI Mail gateways such as the Microsoft Mail Windows client (version 3.0) often cannot view a file attachment with an invalid or missing filename extension.

Common invalid filename extensions are:

FILENAME.MCI

  1. (no extension)
  2. (no extension)
