Line Count Is Incorrect by One Line

Q118515

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1

SYMPTOMS

The line count that appears in the Summary Information Statistics dialog box appears incorrect by one line. (To locate this feature, choose Summary Info from the File menu and choose the Statistics button.)

If the document contains no text, the line count will appear as 0 (zero) lines. If your document contains text but no text is entered in the last paragraph, this line will not be included in the line count.

CAUSE

By design, Word documents contain a single paragraph. This paragraph is not included in the line count.

WORKAROUNDS

Method 1: Word will count this paragraph if at least one character, such as a space is typed on this line.

Method 2: Move the last paragraph mark to the end of the last line of text by deleting any extra paragraph marks between the end of your text and the last paragraph in your document. Click the Show/Hide button on the Standard toolbar to display paragraph marks.
