XL5: No Label Added to Subtotal in List

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you use the Subtotal feature to create subtotals in a list of data, there is no label describing the subtotal value in the list.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you add a subtotal to every field (column) in your list at each change in any of the fields other than the first field in the list of data. For example, if you have the following list

   A1: field1  B1: field2
   A2: 1       B2: a
   A3: 2       B3: a
   A4: 3       B4: b

and you add a subtotal to both field1 and field2, at each change in field2, the result appears as follows:

   A1:  B1: field1  C1: field2
   A2:  B2: 1       C2: a
   A3:  B3: 1       C3: a
   A4:  B4: 2       C4: 2
   A5:  B5: 3       C5: b
   A6:  B6: 1       C6: 1
   A7:  B7: 3       C7: 3

The subtotals in cells B4, C4, B6, C6, B7 and C7 are correct, and the subtotals in column B are bold. However, the resulting subtotals should appear with subtotal labels as follows:

   A1:              B1: field1  C1: field2
   A2:              B2: 1       C2: a
   A3:              B3: 2       C3: a
   A4: a Count      B4: 2       C4: 2
   A5:              B5: 3       C5: b
   A6: b Count      B6: 1       C6: 1
   A7: Grand Count  B7: 3       C7: 3

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel for Windows version 5.0c.
