Drawing and Toolbar Refresh Problems with Dell S3 Video Driver

Q117719

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project for Windows, version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, the following symptoms occur when you use the Dell S3 video driver, which is supplied with some Dell computers, such as the Dell 466/ME:

  • Refresh problems occur when you work with drawing objects
  • Gray dots appear on the toolbar buttons
  • The buttons on a docked toolbar appear in the colors black and gray only
  • The buttons on a floating toolbar appear in green and purple only
  • Toolbar buttons in the Customize dialog box are displayed with incorrect colors

CAUSE

Microsoft has reproduced this problem using the Dell S3 video driver version 3.1.32 in the 800x600 256-color mode and in the 1024x768 256-color mode.

WORKAROUNDS

To work around this problem, do either of the following:

  • Use one of the Microsoft S3 drivers.
  • Use the Microsoft Windows standard VGA video driver.

The following Microsoft S3 video drivers are included in the Windows Driver Library (WDL):

  • S3 928 Video Card Driver (S3-928.EXE) for the S3-928 display chip set
  • S3 924 Video Card Driver (S3-924.EXE) for the S3-924 display chip set
  • S3 801 Video Card Driver (S3-801.EXE) for the S3-801 display chip set

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

(Steps assume you have Dell S3 video driver version 1.32 installed)

  1. In a new project, choose Drawing from the Insert menu.
  2. From the Drawing toolbar, choose the Rectangle button. Drag on the Gantt on top of nonworking time, to create a rectangle that displays over nonworking time.
  3. From the Drawing toolbar, choose the Ellipse button. Drag on the Gantt chart on top of the rectangle to create an ellipse that overlaps the rectangle object.
  4. Select the rectangle object (the bottom object). From the Format menu, choose Drawing, and then choose Bring To Front.

Note that the nonworking time shows through the object. Additionally, if you select a cell on the Gantt sheet, the row that was highlighted either remains highlighted, or changes to a striped pattern. These symptoms may not occur the first time that you follow these steps.
