PRB: "Program Group Cannot Be Displayed" Error During Setup

Q116499

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.2, 4.3
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, version 4.0
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 5.0
  • Microsoft Works for Windows, version 3.0
  • Microsoft Access 2.0

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Setup program for one of the above Microsoft applications, you receive the following error message:

Program group <groupname> cannot be displayed.

This error message occurs repeatedly.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the Setup program tries to exceed the maximum number of program groups that Program Manager allows. Program Manager allows a maximum of 40 program groups.

If you already have 40 program groups, and you then run the Setup program for one of the above applications, you receive this error message if you choose to add a new program group.

WORKAROUND

To avoid receiving this error message when you already have 40 program groups in Program Manager, do either of the following:

  • Eliminate at least one program group before running the Setup program. You can do this by moving program items from one group to another until one of the program groups is empty. Then, select the empty program group and press DEL to remove it.
  • When the Setup program prompts you to add the program icons to a program group, select an existing program group, instead of creating a new program group.
