WordPerfect Paragraph Number Cross-References Lost in WinWord

PSS ID Number: Q114826 Article last modified on 11-01-1994

6.00 6.00a

WINDOWS

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a

SYMPTOM

When you open a WordPerfect document containing paragraph number cross- references into Word 6.0 or 6.0a, the last result of the cross-reference from the original WordPerfect document is retained as normal text. The bookmark (target) of the cross-reference is also retained, but the cross- reference itself is lost. No {REF /n} field is generated and paragraph numbering therefore cannot be updated.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the WordPerfect converter supplied with Word 6.0 and 6.0a for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

To workaround this problem, manually reestablish paragraph number cross- references to associated bookmarks following conversion.

Because the cross-reference targets are retained as bookmarks, and the latest result of a cross-reference is retained at the original location, you can use Word’s Go To option to go to a particular bookmark following conversion. You can then observe the paragraph number for that paragraph, search for the next occurrence of that number in the document, and reinsert a {REF /n} field at that location to restore the cross-reference.
