Compiling Index over Linked Files Restarts Macintosh

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 5.1

SYMPTOMS

While compiling an index in Word 5.1, the Macintosh SE, Plus, PowerBook 100, and Classic (68000-based Macintoshes) restart.

CAUSE

This can occur if you are compiling an index over a series of linked files using Word’s File Series feature. Regardless of how many files are in the series, the Macintosh restarts immediately before the globally compiled index is placed at the end of the last file in the series.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word version 5.1 for Macintosh. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

Combine the documents into one master document prior to compiling the index:

  1. In Word, choose New from the File menu.
  2. From the Insert menu, choose File. Locate the first file of the series and choose Open.

The first document has now been inserted into the master document. With the cursor always at the end of the document, insert the remaining documents, in the order of the file series, into the active document. An index can now be successfully compiled from within the new master document.
