Spell Check Flags Word with Special Characters as Misspelled

PSS ID Number: Q114453 Article last modified on 03-07-1997

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.1

SYMPTOMS

Correctly spelled words are flagged as misspelled during a spell check.

CAUSE

This can occur if the word contains any special character(s) that the spelling checker does not recognize. For example, Word’s spell checker will flag the words “|mouse|” and “^keyboard~” (without the quotation marks) as incorrectly spelled words.

This is a change in functionality from Word 4.0, which ignored these special characters.

WORKAROUND

Temporarily replace the special characters with nonbreaking spaces prior to spell checking the document. (Be sure there are no other nonbreaking spaces in your document first.) For example, the following steps replace the vertical line character with a nonbreaking space:

  1. From the Edit menu, choose Replace.
  2. In the Find What box, type a vertical line.
  3. From the Replace With Special menu, select Non-breaking Space.
  4. Choose Replace All.
  5. Spell check the document.
  6. From the Edit menu, choose Replace.
  7. From the Find What Special menu, select Non-breaking Space.
  8. In the Replace With box, enter a vertical line.
  9. Choose Replace All.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
