Linked Information in Compound Document Not Updated

Q114411

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Assistant for Windows, version 1.0

SYMPTOMS

When you double-click a Microsoft Excel chart in the business plan compound document file (OABPLAN.DOC), make changes to the workbook file, and save the file with another name, the changes are not updated in the chart, and when you double-click the chart again, the linked workbook does not contain the changes that you made.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the links in the compound documents that ship with the Microsoft Office Assistant are manual. Therefore, the links do not automatically update to the new filename when you save the linked file with a new name. Instead, the chart or worksheet object remains linked to the original workbook file.

WORKAROUND

When you have saved a linked file with a new filename, do the following to update the linked information in the compound document:

  1. Select the linked information in the compound document.
  2. From the Edit menu, choose Links.
  3. In the Links dialog box, choose the Change Source button.
  4. From the File Name list, select the name of the file you want to link. Choose OK. In the Links dialog box, choose OK.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Office Assistant provides the following compound documents:

  • Business Plan (OABPLAN.DOC)
  • Client Invoice (OACLIENT.XLS)
  • Newsletter (OANEWSLT.DOC)
  • "What If" Presentation (OAWHATIF.PPT)

The links in the Microsoft Office Assistant compound documents are manual because of the amount of time it takes to update all of the links at one time, which occurs when you open a file if the file contains automatic links. Because the links in a Microsoft Office Assistant compound document are manual, you must update a link anytime you make a change to the linked data, by doing the following:

  1. In the application in which you opened the compound document, select the linked information that you want to update.
  2. From the Edit menu, choose Links.
  3. In the Links dialog box, choose the Update button.
