WINDOWS

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Project for Windows, version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you visually merge two or more projects using the New Window command, and both projects have overallocated resources, the status bar contains the Level message with the name of the overallocated resource in the last project in the merged window.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

Normally, when your project contains multiple overallocated resources, the name of the first resource in the Resource sheet (the resource with the lowest ID number) that is overallocated appears on the status bar with the message “Level.”

When you visually merge files using the New Window command on the Window menu, the list of the open files appears in the order in which you opened the files. The files are also merged in this order–the first file opened appears first in the visually merged window. If you visually merge project files that contain overallocated resources, the message “Level” appears on the status bar with the name of the overallocated resource from the last project file in the visually merged window.

If this last file in the visually merged window contains more than one overallocated resource, the name of the overallocated resource with the lowest ID number in that project appears in the status bar with the message “Level.”

Steps to Reproduce Behavior in Microsoft Project Version 4.0

  1. In Microsoft Project, choose New from the File menu. In the new project, enter 2 tasks, T1 and T2.
  2. From the Standard toolbar, choose the Resource Assignment button. In the Name column, type “Res1” (without the quotation marks) and press ENTER. On the project, select T1. In the Resource Assignment dialog box, choose the Assign button. On the project, select T2. In the Resource Assignment dialog box, choose the Assign button.
  3. From the File menu, choose New to create a new project. In the new project, enter two tasks, T1 and T2.
  4. Repeat step 2 to assign Res2 to both tasks.
  5. From the Window menu, choose New Window. From the Projects list, select Project1, press and hold down the CTRL key, and select Project2. Choose OK.

The two projects appear in a visually merged window, and the status bar contains the message Level: Res2.
