SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Project, when you attach an object to a task on a Gantt chart, the object may disappear. Also, if you change the order of the bar styles listed in the Bar Styles dialog box, objects displayed on the Gantt chart may disappear.
CAUSE
When you insert an object on a Gantt chart, and you attach the object to a task, the object is attached to the first defined bar style for that task. If this bar style is then deleted, or redefined so that the first bar style in the Bar Styles dialog box does not display a bar for that task, the object attached to that task disappears.
Note that this behavior occurs with embedded objects as well as with objects created with the Drawing toolbar.
WORKAROUND
To prevent an inserted object on your Gantt chart from disappearing, do either of the following:
Do not attach the object to a task. Manually move the object to the desired location on the Gantt chart.
-or-
If you attach the object to a task, make sure that the first bar style listed in the Bar Styles dialog box is displayed on the Gantt chart for that task.
MORE INFORMATION
Normally, when you attach an object to a task on a Gantt chart, the object is displayed because the Task bar style is defined as the first style in the Bar Styles dialog box. However, if you then delete the Task style, and redefine it at the bottom of the list of styles, Percent Complete becomes the first bar style in the list. If the task that the object is attached to has 0-percent complete, the object disappears. This happens because the Percent Complete bar is not displayed for this task. If you enter a percent complete for the task, the object appears again.
Steps to Reproduce Behavior
NOTE: These steps assume that Task is the first bar style listed in the Bar Styles dialog box.
- In a new project, choose Gantt Chart from the View menu.
- Enter a task, Task1.
- From the Insert menu, choose Object. From the Object Type list, select any object, and choose OK.
- Select the object. From the Drawing toolbar, choose the Attach To Task button. Select the Attach To Task option, and in the ID box, type the ID of Task1. Choose OK.
- From the Format menu, choose Bar Styles. From the Name column, select Task. Choose the Cut Row button. From the Name column, select a bar style further down in the list, and choose Paste Row. Choose OK.
Note that the object disappears from the Gantt chart even though the task bar is still displayed.
