Q. My text looks fine on the screen but prints with a jagged margin. What's wrong? A. If you are using a proportionally spaced font, such as Arial, and have inserted spaces to separate columns, the text will print with jagged alignment. To correctly align text, use an absolute method such as tabs, columns, or separate frames. - To use tabs, first eliminate the spaces separating your text columns. Then set tab stops where you want your second and subsequent columns to start, and press the TAB key between columns. For more information about setting tabs, refer to pages 198-202 in the "Microsoft Publisher User's Guide." - To use columns, choose Text Frame Properties from the Layout menu and specify the number of columns you want. By default, both columns will be left-aligned. For more information about setting up columns, refer to pages 134-135 in the "Microsoft Publisher User's Guide." - To use separate frames, draw multiple text frames side by side and give them the alignment you want them to have. For more information about creating text frames, refer to pages 128-145 in the "Microsoft Publisher User's Guide." 2. Q. I want to print white text on a black background. How do I do this? A. To print white text on a black background, use the following four-step procedure: 1. Select your text. 2. From the Format menu, choose Character. Choose white as the color for your text. Choose OK. 3. Select the text frame. 4. From the Format menu, choose Shading. Choose solid black as the color for the text box. Choose OK. Some printers, such as the Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet Series II, see TrueType text as black, absolutely. If you are using such a printer, you must select the Print TrueType As Graphics option in the Setup window of the Printers option in Control Panel. 3. Q. How do I format tabs in Publisher? A. For information about setting tabs in Publisher, see the following two references: 1. The "Setting Tabs" section on pages 198-202 of the "Microsoft Publisher User's Guide" 2. Publisher Help; search for the word "tabs" and read the following two topics: a. Changing the Alignment or Leader for Tab Stops b. Inserting or Removing a Tab Stop 4. Q. I cannot access my TrueType fonts in Publisher. What's wrong? A. To troubleshoot this problem, use the following five-step procedure: 1. From the Main group in Windows, open the Control Panel, and choose Fonts. 2. Click the TrueType button and make sure the Enable TrueType Fonts box is selected. Close the Fonts Control Panel. 3. Confirm Windows is supplying TrueType fonts to applications. To do this, launch Windows Write from the Accessories group, choose Fonts from the Character menu, and check for available TrueType fonts. 4. Return to Publisher, create a text frame, and see which fonts are available from the font selection list on the horizontal toolbar. 5. If fonts are available in text frames but not available in WordArt 2.0, check the file byte size of SETUP.INF, which is located in the Windows directory. If this file is more than 60K in size, copy SETUP.INF from your original Windows disks into the Windows directory, overwriting the one on your hard drive. For more information about troubleshooting this problem, order article Q104153 from the Microsoft Publisher FastTips Catalog. 5. Q. How do I overlap text frames so the text in the frame behind doesn't wrap around the frame that is in front? A. Layered text frames normally always provide text wrap. To work around this situation, use the following four-step procedure: 1. Place one of the layered text frames on the background page. (To switch to the background page, choose Background Page from the Page menu.) 2. Place the second (overlapping) layered text frame on the foreground page. 3. Set the shading of the foreground frame to Clear. 4. Arrange the frames to achieve the desired overlapping effect. NOTE: You can use the CTRL+M keyboard combination to toggle between the foreground and background pages. 6. Q. How do I create a watermark in Publisher? A. For information about creating watermarks, please refer to page 111 of the "Microsoft Publisher User's Guide." 7. Q. How do I rotate text in Publisher? A. Publisher cannot rotate text. You can, however, rotate text using WordArt, an object-linking-and-embedding (OLE) server application that ships with Publisher. WordArt 1.0 can rotate text to 30, 45, and 90 degrees. WordArt 2.0 can rotate TrueType text incrementally, to any degree. For more information about WordArt, see the WordArt topic in Publisher Help or refer to chapter 7 in your "Microsoft Publisher User's Guide." 8. Q. I have text in a format for which Publisher has no filter. How can I import that text? A. There are two methods you can use to import text that is in a format Publisher can't import directly: The clipboard method and the text file method. 1. The Clipboard Method a. Import the text into another Windows-based application. b. Select and copy the text to the Windows Clipboard. c. Create a text frame in Publisher and paste the text into the text frame. 2. The Text File Method a. Open the text file in its native application and save the file in a text only format. b. Create a text frame in Publisher and choose Import Text from the File menu. c. Locate and select the text file you created, and choose OK. For more information about importing text into Publisher, refer to the topic "Importing Text" in the Publisher Help file. You may also want to query on the name of the application from which you want to import the text. 9. Q. What should I do when I reach the end of a text frame but I want to type more text? A. When your text reaches the end of a text frame, it automatically flows into the overflow area. To see the overflowed text, you can either make your text frame larger, copy part of the text to another frame, or link the first text frame to a second one. To link text frames, use the following four-step procedure: 1. Create a new text frame, either on the same page or on a different one. 2. Click the original text frame. 3. Click the button at the bottom of the text frame. Your pointer should change to a cup icon. 4. Position your pointer over the new, empty text frame, and press your left mouse button. The text that was in the overflow area should now appear in the new text frame. The two text frames are now linked. For more information about creating, editing, and changing text frames, refer to page 128 of the "Microsoft Publisher User's Guide." Also, see the "Text Frames" topic in Publisher Help. 10. Q. What I see on my screen does not look like what I have typed, and the rest of my text doesn't show in the text frame. What's wrong? A. Publisher has several views from which you can choose. Each of these views requires that Publisher resize the document to simulate the different zoom percentages, from 3 percent to 400 percent, depending on the document. Publisher does its best to represent your text and graphics accurately in the view you select. To view your document in the most accurate view, however, you must set the percentage to 100 percent. All other views are merely an approximation.
