SYMPTOMS

While running the Works tutorial, you may receive the error message

Tutorial cannot continue. Choose OK to return to Works.

followed by the error message:

MS Works caused a General Protection Fault in module MSWORKS.EXE

The system may then either stop responding (hang) or exit Windows and produce the following system error message

EMM386 has detected error <ERR #> in an application at memory address <mem add>. To minimize the chance of data loss, EMM386 has halted your computer. For more information, see the README.TXT file.

To restart your computer, press ENTER.

where <ERR #> is an exception error that may vary and <mem add> is a memory address that also may vary.

CAUSE

This is caused by not having a default printer selected in Windows.

RESOLUTION

To prevent the error message from occurring, either set one of the currently installed printers as the default, or install a printer driver and set it as the default printer.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

NOTE: Close all other applications and make sure no documents are open because you may have to restart your system.

  1. In the Control Panel window, choose the Printers icon.
  2. Remove the current default printer so that the Default Printer box reads No Default Printer.
  3. Close Control Panel and open Works for Windows.
  4. From the Help menu, choose Tutorial.
  5. Select the Using Tools Together tab.
  6. Select Strategies For Using Works For Windows.
  7. After you choose PAGE DOWN six times, Works gives you a choice of three different lessons. Select Layout A Business Plan.
  8. Works starts opening files and the following message appears:

    Please wait a moment: The Works for Window tutorial is almost ready.

    This message will be replaced by the error message:

    The tutorial cannot continue. Choose OK to return to Works.

Choosing OK produces a general protection (GP) fault in Works.
