SUMMARY

Microsoft PowerPoint version 4.0 for Windows allows sites with multiple licenses of PowerPoint to install PowerPoint to a shared network file server. The PowerPoint Readme Help file, PPREADME.HLP, describes the contents of most of the subdirectories that are created during the administrative installation, but doesn’t list the contents of the shared PowerPoint program files directory, or of the SHARED or SYSTEM subdirectories in the shared PowerPoint directory.

MORE INFORMATION

The other directories created during the network administrative setup of PowerPoint are identical to the subdirectories created in the PowerPoint directory and Windows directory during a complete installation. The contents are documented in the PowerPoint Readme Help file.

NOTE: Because the actual names of some of the directories are controlled by the user administrator, the following generic terms will be used in this article:

<pptshare> Directory

The <pptshare> directory contains a combination of the files that would be installed during a complete installation to the PowerPoint program directory <pptdir>, the SETUP directory and some of the files that will be copied to the user’s Windows directory <windir>.

The SYSTEM directory contains those files that are considered Windows system files and need to be installed to the user’s Windows system directory <sysdir>. Some of the types of files included are fonts, OLE files, digital video codecs, audio codecs, and so on.

SHARED Directory

The SHARED directory is created as a subdirectory of the <pptshare> directory during the administrative installation of PowerPoint. This directory contains duplicates of the files that are in the <msapps> directory in order to have them accessible for installation and use when the <msapps> directory is not accessible from a given workstation.
