How to Import WinWord 6.0 Documents into Windows PageMaker

Q110941

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0

SUMMARY

PageMaker versions 4.0 and 5.0 for Windows currently do not directly support the import of information from Word 6.0 for Windows documents.

WORKAROUND

To import information from a Word 6.0 document into PageMaker 4.0 or 5.0, first save the Word 6.0 document in Word 2.0 format and then import (place) the Word 2.0 document into a PageMaker story.

MORE INFORMATION

A Word 2.0 for Windows import filter is supplied with PageMaker 5.0 for Windows. However, PageMaker 4.0, as purchased, cannot import Word 2.0 documents or documents that have been saved from Word 2.0 in Rich Text Format (RTF) or Word 1.x format.

An updated Word 2.0 for Windows import converter (filter) is included in the PageMaker for Windows Filter/Driver Pack #5, which is available from Aldus Customer Service. The Word 2.0 for Windows filter is also available for download in the self-extracting file WNWD2.EXE from the PC Utilities/Drivers/Filters section of the Aldus forum on CompuServe.

Immediate Workarounds

  • If you have PageMaker 4.0 and don't have immediate access to the updated Word 2.0 for Windows import filter from Aldus, you can save from Word 6.0 as Word for MS-DOS or WordPerfect 5.1 for MS-DOS format and import (place) from that format into your PageMaker story.

-or-

  • PageMaker 4.0 can read Word 6.0 text from the Windows Clipboard. In PageMaker, choose Paste Special from the Edit menu. Select Rich Text Format (retains the character formatting you applied in Word) or Text (removes Word formatting and applies PageMaker formatting), and then choose the Paste button.

The products mentioned here, Aldus PageMaker for Windows versions 4.0 and 5.0 and their associated import filters, are manufactured by a vendor independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding these products performance or reliability.

For more information on using PageMaker 4.0 and 5.0 for Windows and their import filters, or for more information on the limitations associated with these import filters, contact Aldus Technical Support at (206) 628-2040.
