SYMPTOMS
Annotation markers which appear on the screen, but are actually the result of a link to another source, appear as graphics when you open a the Microsoft Word for the Macintosh 5.x file in Microsoft Word versions 6.0 and later.
CAUSE
An annotation which is linked to another source using the Paste Special command is treated as a graphic in Word 5.x for the Macintosh even though the option for Formatted Text was chosen when the link was established. When you open the document in Word versions 6.0 and later, Word treats it as a graphic as well.

An annotation mark can take on the appearance of a balloon with your initials, something like:

When an annotation has been inserted into a Word for the Macintosh document and that document is then copied and paste-linked into another Word for the Macintosh document, Word for the Macintosh treats the annotation contained in the link as a graphic. When you attempt to view annotations in a link, the error message "There are no annotations in this document" is displayed.
To view the annotation, you must view it in the original Word document, not the linked document.
