Publisher May Hang, Printing Irregular Wrap Text to LaserJet 4
Publisher May Hang, Printing Irregular Wrap Text to LaserJet 4
Q110516
------------------------------------------------------------------- The information in this article applies to: - Microsoft Publisher versions 2.0 and 2.0a ------------------------------------------------------------------- SYMPTOMS ======== If you print irregular wrap text from Publisher to a HP LaserJet 4, Publisher may stop responding (hang), requiring you to restart your computer. RESOLUTION ========== There are three possible solutions: 1. Use a printer driver for a HP LaserJet Series II or III.(For information about how to change printer drivers, see your "Microsoft Windows User's Guide.") -or- 2. Do not use the irregular text wrap feature; instead, use manual text alignment to position the text where you want it. (For details on how to manually position text, see the "Microsoft Publisher User's Guide.") -or- 3. Edit the irregular wrap border to eliminate horizontal and near horizontal segments in the border, either by deleting or moving control vertices. (For details about how to edit the irregular text wrap border, see pages 266-267 of the "Microsoft Publisher User's Guide.") -or- 4. Upgrade to the HP LaserJet 4 printer driver version 1.18, or 1.26 or later (do not use version 1.25). Make sure that Page Protection is set to Letter or Legal, as appropriate. NOTE: To print at 600 dpi with Page Protection, you must have at least 6 MB of RAM memory on your printer. If you have a modem, you can download the HP LaserJet 4 driver from the Microsoft Download Service: Call (425) 936-6735 and download the file called HPCL5E.EXE. MORE INFORMATION ================ When you try to print to a Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 4 from Publisher using the HP LaserJet 4 printer drivers and the irregular text wrap feature is used to wrap text close to the border of a graphic, Publisher may hang. This occurs if there are horizontal (or almost horizontal) segments in the border around the graphic. If Publisher hangs, you must restart your machine, either by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL or by using a reset button. WORKAROUND ========== Use the printer driver for either the HP LaserJet II or III, which allows Publisher 2.0 to print irregular text wrap without hanging. NOTE: Neither of these printer drivers support the 600 dpi capability of the HP LaserJet 4 printer. Removing the horizontal and near horizontal segments of the irregular text wrap border may allow printing with the LaserJet 4 drivers at 600 dpi but you may notice a decrease in printing speed. Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Publisher version 2.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
