SYMPTOMS
When you use the AutoFormat feature in Word, Word does not replace hyphens with en dashes. However, Word replaces two hyphens in a row with an em dash.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, replace hyphens with en dashes manually. To do so, use the method appropriate for your version of Word.
Word 98 Macintosh Edition
- On the Edit menu, click Replace.
- In the Find What box, type a hyphen.
- Press the TAB key to move the insertion point to the Replace With box.
- Click More.
- Click Special, and then click En Dash.
- Click Replace or Replace All.
Word 6.x, 7.x
- On the Edit menu, click Replace.
- In the Find What box, type a hyphen.
- Press the TAB key to move the insertion point to the Replace With box.
- Click Special, and then click En Dash.
- Click Replace or Replace All.
