SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you sort a Gantt Chart, you may receive one of the following error messages:

• An Error has Occurred in your Application . . . (Microsoft Project for Windows).

  -or-

• The application “unknown” has unexpectedly quit, (Microsoft Project for the Macintosh).

In Microsoft Project versions 3.0 and 3.0a this usually occurs when you are using the Renumber sort option.

CAUSE

This problem can occur while sorting a Gantt chart that has more than 145 characters total for the bar names defined in the palette.

WORKAROUNDS

If you are renumbering, you can switch to a Task Sheet View, perform the renumbering and switch back to the Gantt Chart View. Alternatively, you can shorten your Gantt Chart Palette bar names so that you have no more than 145 characters total.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Project for Windows version 4.0.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

1. Enter 2 tasks.
2. From the View menu, choose Define Views. Choose the New button. Choose Single Pane View. Choose OK.
3. In the View definition dialog box, Choose Gantt Chart as the Screen, Entry as the Table, and All Tasks as the Filter. Choose OK. Choose Set.
4. From the Format menu, choose Palette.
5. Cut all existing bar definitions.
6. In the name field of the first bar enter “1234567890” (without the quotation marks)
7. Cut the new bar and paste 14 times (this gives you 140 total characters in name). Choose OK.
8. Create a 15th bar by entering “123456” (without the quotation mars) into the bar name field. Choose OK

Your palette now has a total of 146 characters for the bar names.

9. From the Format menu, choose Sort. Choose a 1st key other than ID. Choose the Renumber button.

You will receive the error message “An Error has Occurred in your Application…” (Windows) or “The application”unknown" has unexpectedly quit…" (Macintosh) and Microsoft Project will hang (stop responding).
